Body Burden Community Monitoring Handbook

- A TOOL FOR EMPOWERMENT -

The Body Burden Community Monitoring Handbook is an initiative of the Community Monitoring Working Group (CMWG) of the International POPS Elimination Network. It aims to support the implementation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants 2001 by facilitating and supporting community monitoring of POPs and other persistent toxic substances.

The CMWG promotes community monitoring of chemicals and supports ongoing NGO involvement in the Global Monitoring Program for POPs. This will facilitate the effective phase out and elimination of the dirty dozen POPs chemicals, help identify new POP candidates and aid in the struggle for a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment.

The Body Burden Community Monitoring Handbook provides a source of information on the body burdens of chemicals and community monitoring initiatives. It serves as a central point for the collection and dissemination of community generated or sourced monitoring data and information. A template form is available to facilitate a coordinated input from community groups and civil society.

While the Handbook is a work in progress, as we move towards the first Conference of the Parties, it will help provide the focus and support to sustain community and NGO involvement in the global monitoring for POPs and the implementation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
