SOUTH AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCE ON MULTIPLE CHEMICAL SENSITIVITY
Responding To The Public Health Crisis Of Chemical Injury

NEW! See also Pesticide Reduction Strategies

March 1st 2004

The convenor of the SA Task Force on MCS, Peter Evans, has strongly criticised the Commonwealth’s Office of Chemical Safety for advising the government to take no action on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. He questions government claims that the public is being protected from harmful exposure to toxic chemicals and that international standards in chemical regulation are working adequately.

The truth is that low levels of common chemicals in pesticide, paint, cleaners, new building materials, perfumes, plastics, glues and many other products are causing multiple chemical sensitivity and other poorly recognised health problems.

The failure of governments and bureaucrats to address these problems in chemical regulation has resulted in a public health crisis with large numbers of people disabled with MCS and ignored.

He asserts that the Commonwealth's Office of Chemical Safety has failed to protect the public health interest and is engaged in serious human rights violations against people with multiple chemical sensitivity and those who are at risk of developing the condition.

A public protest recognising MCS and calling for a national MCS prevention, treatment and disability access strategy was held on Wednesday March 17 at 12pm, at the Department of Health and Ageing, 55 Currie St, Adelaide.

People with MCS are routinely denied access to health care, housing, education, employment, public services and public spaces due to chemical barriers, ignorance and a deliberate government policy of denial of evidence on MCS.
